Taylor Wessing advises money.co.uk on its sale to ZPG Plc for up to £140m

11 Sep 2017

Taylor Wessing has advised money.co.uk, one of the UK’s leading financial comparison websites, on its sale to LSE listed ZPG Plc, for up to £140m.

Money.co.uk, established in 2008 by serial entrepreneur Chris Morling, helps consumers make smarter financial decisions by comparing thousands of deals from over 600 providers across more than 60 product categories including mortgages, loans, credit cards, bank accounts and insurance.

ZPG Plc’s acquisition of money.co.uk expands its consumer facing model which already owns and operates some of the UK’s most trusted property and household-related digital brands, including Zoopla, Umbrella, PrimeLocation and Hometrack.

This deal follows other recent high profile technology deals that Taylor Wessing has worked on including advising Farfetch on its US$397m investment by, and strategic partnership with, e-commerce giant JD.com, advising Outfit7 Investments on its ground-breaking sale for US$1bn to a consortium of investors from Asia, acting for Supercell on the acquisition of a majority interest in Space Ape Games for US$56m, and advising Magic Pony on its US$150m sale to Twitter.

Chris Morling, Founder & CEO of money.co.uk said: “I am very proud of what we have achieved over the last nine years. We have developed a strong and loyal brand and are looking forward to the next phase of our growth. We look forward to becoming part of the ZPG family, and cannot thank Mike Turner and his team at Taylor Wessing enough for their expert guidance, speed of delivery, and in-depth knowledge of our sector.”

Mike Turner, Partner & Head of Technology, Media and Communications at Taylor Wessing added: “We relish working with market leading brands, and money.co.uk is no exception. Rising from a start-up player in 2008, to where it is today is exceptional. This, as a result, was a high profile transaction which required exceptional teamwork on behalf of money.co.uk to fulfill its strategic aim. We couldn’t be happier for Chris and the team at money.co.uk, and remain very excited by what the future holds for them as part of ZPG’s product offering.”

The Taylor Wessing team was led by partner Mike Turner with support from Corporate Technology senior associate Alexandra Richardson and associate Katie Kaplucha, as well as a wide team of specialists in other areas across the firm.
