KWM advise The Stage Shoreditch LLP on the subscription by Chinese property developer Vanke

16 Nov 2015

King & Wood Mallesons have advised The Stage Shoreditch LLP, a joint-venture established in May this year between Cain Hoy Enterprises, McCourt Global, Galliard Homes and Investec Structured Property Finance, on the subscription of a 21% holding by Chinese real estate developer Vanke in The Stage, a £750 million mixed use development in Shoreditch.

Vanke is the fourth-largest real estate owner in the world and the largest residential real estate developer in China. The development incorporates the remains of Shakespeare’s 16th century Curtain Theatre, where Romeo and Juliet was first performed and has consent for a mixed-use scheme including a 40-storey residential tower and over 250,000 sq ft of office, retail and leisure accommodation set around over an acre of vibrant public space. The remains of the theatre will also be excavated and preserved as part of the development, providing a new tourist attraction for domestic and international visitors.

Michael Goldberg, Corporate partner at King & Wood Mallesons said: “Having advised the joint-venture on its recent acquisition of the site, we are delighted to have assisted on the next phase of this exciting project."

King & Wood Mallesons activated a cross-practice team which included members of corporate, real estate, finance, tax teams as well as planning and environment and was led by partners Michael Goldberg, and Simon Tager, with associates Natalie Steur and Matthew Dickerson. Vanke were advised by Jones Day.
